2 major industry players combine forces to drive medical imaging AI ‘directly into clinical settings’

An imaging industry supplier best known for a widely adopted radiology reporting platform is partnering on radiological artificial intelligence with a company that pioneered GPUs and accelerated computing.

Nuance Communications and NVIDIA announced their strategic alliance Nov. 14.

Together the companies are aiming to put AI-based diagnostic tools “directly into the hands of radiologists and other clinicians at scale, enabling the delivery of improved patient care at lower cost,” according to the announcement.

The pair point to Mass General Brigham as one of the first major medical centers to tap the fruit of the collaboration, which combines NVIDIA’s Monai imaging AI framework with Nuance’s AI-inclusive cloud platform, the Precision Imaging Network.

Using the combined offering, the Boston-based hospital system has reduced the waiting period for results on certain breast exams from several days to just 15 minutes, the announcement states.

AI researchers at Mass General Brigham now can “focus on training and developing their models rather than doing all the plumbing underneath,” says Keith Dreyer, DO, PhD, the institution’s chief data science officer.

Nuance and NVIDIA say their jointly developed technology uses a “continuous clinic-to-research feedback loop” that “reduces model adaptation times from years to weeks.”

At Mass General Brigham, the companies add, the system has helped cut costs for medical-imaging AI application development and maintenance.
