Radiology provider Akumin appoints chief medical officer

Radiology and radiation oncology provider Akumin continues its C-suite makeover, announcing the appointment of a new chief medical officer Tuesday.

Board-certified rad Nasir Siddiqui, MD, MBA, is taking on the role for the Plantation, Florida-based organization. He previously spent nine years at Duly Health and Care, a large multispecialty group in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove, Illinois, including three as chairman of radiology.

In the new role, Siddiqui will oversee Akumin’s strategic clinical priorities, focusing on quality and safety, “operational excellence” and efficiency, integrating technology to enhance productivity, and innovation in care delivery. The company believes it handles the largest volume of MRI and PET-CT exams in the country, partnering with over 1,000 healthcare organizations in the U.S.

“With this nationwide imaging and oncology network, we can raise the bar for quality, precision, and equitable access in patient care,” Siddiqui said in a statement May 6. “My priority is to translate clinical insight into operational excellence, so every patient, physician and partner experiences the very best Akumin has to offer."

Before Duly, he served as medical director for Riverside Radiology and Interventional Associates in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to that, Siddiqui was an assistant professor of radiology with the University of Pittsburgh, where he completed his residency. He studied medicine at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and later obtained an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Siddiqui joins new Akumin CEO Henry Howe, MBA, who has led the organization since last month after previously serving as interim chief executive and chief financial officer for Envision Healthcare. Akumin—which emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2023—also announced the planned departure of CFO Juan Perez last month, but it has yet to publicly name a successor.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Siddiqui to Akumin," Howe said in the announcement. “His distinguished track record of clinical excellence, operational expertise, and strategic leadership will be instrumental as we continue to advance our mission of delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.”

The new F-18 flurpiridaz radiotracer is expected to help drive cardiac PET growth, but it requires waiting between rest and stress scans. Software from MultiFunctional Imaging can help care teams combat that problem.

News of an incident is a stark reminder that healthcare workers and patients aren’t the only ones who need to be aware around MRI suites.

The ACR hopes these changes, including the addition of diagnostic performance feedback, will help reduce the number of patients with incidental nodules lost to follow-up each year.
