Radiologist sentenced to 10 years in prison, $250K fine for kickback scheme
Radiologist Ronald Grusd, MD, has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison and ordered to pay a $250,000 fine after being found guilty of fraud and bribery in connection with a detailed kickback scheme back in December 2017.
According to a new report from Times of San Diego, Grusd’s two Beverly Hills, California-based companies, California Imaging Network Medical Group and Willows Consulting Company, must also pay a $500,000 fine and an additional $15,600 in “special assessments.”
During Grusd’s seven-day trial in December, evidence was presented to the jury that showed Grusd and his companies paid kickbacks so that they could bill insurance providers for more than $25 million in medical services. Those services included MRIs and ultrasounds, among others.
California Imaging Network Medical Group would bill the insurance providers, and then Willows Consulting Company would funnel the kickback payments to recipients.
