About half of the 93 million CT exams performed in the U.S. in 2023 used IV contrast, and volume is expected to keep climbing. At that scale, contrast is an operational resource as much as a clinical one, and small differences in how protocols are carried out are repeated across every scanner, shift and site. Contrast shortages have brought conversations to the forefront. Most departments know the clinical approaches needed but the harder part is applying them consistently with a stretched technologist workforce. Our panel examines where variability enters the CT contrast workflow, why it persists and why optimizing CT contrast utilization is becoming increasingly important.

Attendees will come away with a clearer view of the trade-offs between fixed and personalized protocols, the limits of managing injector settings manually and the metrics that can show whether protocols are being followed consistently.

From this webinar, you will know how to:

  • Better understand how rising CT volume, technologist shortages and contrast supply disruptions have made contrast utilization an operational issue as well as a clinical one.

  • Identify the points in the CT contrast workflow where variability most often enters, including manual dose calculation, protocol execution across technologists and shifts, and injector settings across sites.

  • Describe how saline test injections can be used to assess IV patency and help reduce the need for repeat injections, and how saline flushes can reduce residual contrast in tubing and improve bolus shape.

  • Compare fixed-volume CT contrast protocols with personalized dosing based on patient weight, contrast concentration and scanner kVp.

  • Analyze how Imaging Bulk Package workflows, used with an approved transfer set or a compatible multipatient injector, change contrast preparation steps and help minimize waste compared to single-vial containers

  • Identify technology approaches that can support broader adoption of contrast utilization strategies through standardized workflows, protocol management and performance visibility.
