Canon Celebrates Grand Opening of New Americas Headquarters

Digital imaging company Canon U.S.A. Inc. invited notable elected officials, including Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), to tour its new 700,000-square-foot headquarters in Melville, NY, at the grand opening ceremony. The five-storey building sits on 52 acres of land that Canon purchased in 2007. The building itself took three years to build. The land and construction cost approximately $500 million all together, the company says. Joining Senator Schumer at the ceremony were Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and the Huntington Town Supervisor Frank P. Petrone. In addition, Kenneth Adams, president and CEO of Empire State Development, attended as a representative of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Canon executives in attendance included Fujio Mitarai, chairman and CEO of Canon Inc., and Joe Adachi, president and CEO of Canon U.S.A. Senator Shumer had played an important role in keeping Cannon’s headquarters on Long Island. “I fought hard, along with officials from Long Island, to secure millions of dollars for road improvements in-and-around this heavily commuted corridor and worked to secure millions of stimulus dollars so that Canon could relocate to Melville,” he stated in the press release. “With over 1,400 jobs on Long Island, Canon is an asset to the local economy and I am proud to have seen this project through to fruition. Canon’s other two worldwide headquarters are located in London and Tokyo. When the building is fully occupied, it may have as many as 2,450 employees and consultants working there.
