Nuance Communications Acquires Webmedx

Nuance Communications Inc., a Burlington, Mass.-based provider of transcription services, has acquired Webmedx Inc., of Atlanta, Ga., for an undisclosed amount. Headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., Webmedx offers transcription and editing services and clinical documentation technology for hospitals and clinics. According to officials of both companies, the acquisition of Webmedx will shore up Nuance's Nuance Transcription Services unit by integrating Webmedx’s Quality Analytics application with Nuance’s clinical language understanding systems. The latter is based on natural language processing, . Webmedx counts among its customers more than 100 hospitals, according to officials. In addition to the transcription and documentation technology, Burlington-based Nuance (Nasdaq: NUAN) receives under terms of the deal Webmedx’s Medical Technology Education Center (MTEC), an online speech recognition editing and medical transcription school.
