RSNA flagship journal soars in influence; Lancet bumps NEJM on strength of pandemic publishing
RSNA’s Radiology has seen its journal impact factor leap from 11.105 in 2020 to 29.146 in 2021, according to association’s reading of the 2022 edition of Journal Citation Reports issued June 28 by the analytics firm Clarivate.
Researchers cited Radiology articles more than 76,000 times in 2021, making it tops in the category of radiology, nuclear medicine and medical imaging, RSNA points out in a June 29 news release.
Radiology editor David Bluemke, MD, PhD, says the journal’s rising impact factor is “representative of the fundamental importance of imaging throughout our hospitals and clinics.”
RSNA notes its impact factor has risen steadily since 2015.
Meanwhile Clarivate cites COVID-19 research as a consistent impact booster for journals whose 2021 article acceptance patterns reflected the arc of the pandemic.
Also of note from Clarivate: The Lancet had a 2021 impact factor of 202.731, ranking it No. 1 in the general and internal medicine category.
This marked the first time in 45 years that the top slot was not occupied by the New England Journal of Medicine.
Of the 10 articles with the highest citation count in 2021, Clarivate adds, three appeared in The Lancet—and all three had to do with COVID-19 research.
