University of Iowa Fires Tenured Radiology Professor, Dr. Juweid

Radiologist Malik Juweid who has been in a long running dispute with the University of Iowa was fired from his position as a tenured professor at the university after a three-person judicial panel found that he had indeed compromised patient confidentiality and acted inappropriately toward coworkers. Juweid, 51, had been on a leave of absence from the university but drawing a salary of $245,683 a year since January of 2011. The dispute between him and the university centered around what the university said was inappropriate behavior including allegations of racism and wishing colleagues dead. Juweid, who was hired by the University of Iowa in 2000, has maintained that after a decade at the school he was retaliated against for drawing attention to inappropriate use of imaging, particularly in pediatric patients and because he is Jordanian. In the course of the dispute between Juweid and the University, Juweid had filed and dropped a whistleblower suit and filed discrimination complaints. Juweid says he he will appeal to the state Board of Regents and file a court injunction halting the termination, according to the Iowa ABC affiliate TV news KCRG.
