FDA: Florida radiologist’s mammograms have ‘serious image quality deficiencies’
Patients were unable to get their imaging records—including mammograms—from Deerfield Beach, Florida-based imaging center Radiology Express when the practice’s doors closed late last year. Owner and radiologist Kaya Colak, MD, said his business couldn’t pay its bills so his employees quit.
“We didn’t have the personnel to provide the patients the records at that time,” Colak told WSVN. “I did the best that I could under very, very difficult circumstances to protect the integrity of the patients’ medical records.”
And while patients can now get access to their records through a third-party physician, the FDA says there may be problems with the quality of the mammograms—and issued a warning to women after an inspection of Radiology Express found “serious image quality deficiencies.”
The FDA added the mammograms are not inaccurate, though Colak was required to notify his patients. He has not done so and also believes none of his mammograms were compromised in quality.
