Veteran radiologist Matthew A. Mauro, MD, named RSNA's new president

It's official: Matthew A. Mauro, MD, has been named the new president of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Board of Directors. The announcement came at RSNA 2022, the organization's annual meeting.

Mauro is president of the University of North Carolina (UNC) Faculty Physicians and senior physician executive of UNC Health Care System Revenue Cycle. He is also a professor at the UNC School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he has worked as a faculty member since 1982.

Mauro currently serves as Chair of the RSNA Board of Directors. In a statement about his elevation to the society’s presidency, he discussed his observations on quickly shifting conditions in health care, especially as institutions emerge from the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The healthcare landscape is rapidly changing as we enter our post-pandemic environment,” he said in the statement. “In addition to technical and scientific advances, we can anticipate changes to our healthcare delivery systems, labor management and patient expectations."

Given these upcoming changes, Mauro posits that RSNA can serve a key role as an organization that brings together a wide group of people with the potential to collectively move radiology forward. Specifically, he highlighted his desire to support the dissemination of high-quality research and education.

“The RSNA will maintain our position as the great convener for all those who interact with our members to advance the fields of diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, radiation oncology and medical physics. I am honored to have the privilege of serving as president of the RSNA.”

The RSNA statement describes Mauro as “a prolific researcher” as well as “a dedicated RSNA volunteer.” In addition to serving as Chair of the Board, he previously spent time serving on RSNA’s Scientific Program Committee, Public Information Advisors Network, Research and Education Foundation Public Relations Committee, and the Corporate Giving Subcommittee. Mauro was also the associate editor for Radiology from 2002 to 2007.

He will be replaced in his role as Chair of the Board of Directors by Curtis P. Langlotz, MD, PhD
