ACR collaborates with ASTRO on updated radiation therapy guidelines
The American College of Radiology has teamed up with the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) on updated radiation therapy parameters for clinicians.
The groups published seven updated practice parameters geared toward recommended procedures and considerations for clinicians to safely administer radiation by specific practice area.
Both organizations developed three of the parameters:
An additional four practice parameters were updated, which target the medical use of specific radioactive resources. Those were created with help from the American College of Nuclear Medicine (ACNM), the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), the American Brachytherapy Society (ABS), the Society for Pediatric Radiology (SPR) and the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR):
- Performing therapy using unsealed radiopharmaceutical sources
- Performing therapy when using Radium-223
- Treating benign and malignant thyroid disease using I-131 Sodium Iodide
- Practice parameter for selective internal radiation therapy or radioembolization using microsphere device brachytherapy device in patients with liver malignancies
