Major med-tech player to tap Mayo data for research advancement, product development

Mayo Clinic is opening its stores of real-world data from 10 million de-identified patients to a U.S.-based medical technology outfit with 75,000 employees and international reach.

New Jersey-headquartered Becton, Dickinson and Company, aka BD, will access Mayo Clinic Platform’s gated “Discover” portal to “to generate deeper insight into the patient experience that will help the company accelerate and enhance innovation around both existing products and unmet needs,” according to a BD announcement.

Lisa Boyle, a BD vice president, places the collaboration against the context of medical discovery when it’s limited to clinical trials.

“We need to be leveraging real-world evidence to understand the many parameters that we wouldn’t normally capture in a clinical trial,” Boyle says, “and understand patients’ care pathways and address the needs of diverse patients in order to establish better solutions for better outcomes and experiences.”

Mayo says the repository houses structured and unstructured data from 1.2 billion lab test results, 3 million echocardiograms and more than 640 million clinical notes.

Steven Bethke, a Mayo Clinic Platform VP, says the institution’s analytical tools and massive data stores “create a dynamic, privacy-protected environment for discovery that … [can enable] medical technology leaders such as BD to derive key insights as they develop solutions for their customers and patients as quickly and safely as possible.”
