Julie Bulman, MD

As a rising leader in interventional radiology and current chair of the Women in IR Council of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR), Dr. Julie Bulman exemplifies the innovative spirit and leadership qualities that define the next generation of radiology leaders, while actively working to advance gender equity in the field.

As a pioneering force in telehealth implementation within interventional radiology, she has revolutionized patient care delivery at BIDMC by establishing a comprehensive virtual IR clinic. Her work resulted in the first published paper on telehealth clinic implementation in radiology practice in the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (2020), setting a precedent for the industry. Her expertise in this arena has earned her recognition as the Department of Radiology's telehealth representative for both Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians and BIDMC, where she's played a crucial role in shaping system-wide telehealth policies and platform decisions.

Dr. Bulman’s clinical excellence spans a broad spectrum of interventional procedures, with particular expertise in iliofemoral venous disease, DVT catheter-directed therapies, and complex IVC filter removal. As co-director of the BIDMC Vascular Lab, she's demonstrated outstanding leadership in clinical operations while maintaining the highest standards of patient care. Her commitment to comprehensive patient care—from initial consultation through long-term follow-up—exemplifies the modern interventional radiologist's role as a true clinician.

Beyond clinical practice, her contributions to education and mentorship are remarkable. As associate program director for both IR Integrated and Independent Residencies, she has spearheaded innovative curriculum reforms that transformed conventional training into an interactive, engaging learning experience. Her leadership in educational initiatives extends to delivering CME lectures and sharing expertise in practice management and telehealth implementation at national forums, including the annual SIR Coding Webinar.

Dr. Bulman has successfully balanced the demands of a 90 percent clinical practice while advancing telehealth initiatives, conducting research, and mentoring the next generation of interventional radiologists. Her ongoing research in telehealth patient and provider satisfaction demonstrates her commitment to continuous improvement in healthcare delivery. 

Her contributions have not only advanced her institution but have also created a blueprint for the future of interventional radiology practice nationwide, while helping pave the way for other women in IR.
