Saif Afat, PD, Dr.
PD (Associate Professor) Dr. Saif Afat has extensive experience in clinical practice and research as well as being active in national and international radiology organizations. He was recently named the managing senior physician for staff and research coordination at the Radiological Institute of the University Hospital of Tübingen. He is in charge of more than 60 physicians and approximately 20 research groups. His leadership in coordinating large-scale research initiatives like the Radiological Cooperative Network projects (RACOON-COMBINE and RACOON-BI), funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research, is testament of his ability not only to lead but also to connect. Tübingen is well known for having the biggest and most productive RACOON team, which has produced a significant number of publications and cooperations on multi-institutional research project (for example standardized CT protocols for COVID patients).
Dr. Afat leads the Advanced Imaging Techniques research group at his own institute and has been a strident advocate for implementing technological advancements such as low-dose CT imaging and AI-driven diagnostics come to mind. With more than 100 publications, his CV is deep. Beyond research, Dr. Afat has shown a dedication to education. He has been involved in medical teaching for almost a decade and has been a crucial leader, board member and chairperson on a multitude of committees with not only the German Radiology Society but also international cooperations such as the Radiology Trainee Forum the European Society of Radiology.
Dr. Afat also has received multiple awards and prizes, including the Wachsmann-Innovation-Prize (twice!) from the German radiological society, the Marc-Dnzl-Prize as well as several travel and research grants. He has received multiple accolades from his peers and the leaders of our radiological society for his personal and professional dedication to radiology.
