RANT Named Biggest Practice by FTE Radiologists
Radiology Associates, based in Forth Worth, Tex, held onto the top spot in the annual Radiology Business Journal (RBJ) ranking of largest radiology practices by full-time equivalent (FTE) radiologists.
It reported a total of 124 FTE radiologists this year. It is followed by Advanced Radiology Services (ARS), Grand Rapids, Mich (2nd place); Integra Imaging, Spokane, Wash, (3rd place); Radia Medical Imaging, Everett, Wash (4th place); and Andvanced Radiology, Baltimore, Md, (5th place).
Overall, the biggest practices surged in size. The number of radiologist at the 20 largest groups increased 13%, compared to just a 9% increase for all top 100 largest groups. The average group in the top 20 now has more than 85 radiologists.
However, the survey also indicted that the number of hospital contracts held is not rising, pointing to increasingly fierce competition for contracts. Only the largest and the smallest practice-size cohorts in the top 100 saw increases in contracts held. The median number of hospitals served by the middle practice-size cohort (50 to 65 FTE radiologists) decreased from 11 to 9.
