What it was like working in radiology 40 years ago
Thurston Talk takes us through the field of Radiology in the past 40 years with James Bonifield, MD, of South Sound Radiology.
Bonifield shares his experiences from the first arteriogram he performed, to being an advocate of CT scans, PET scans and MRI before they were available to the field. South Sound Radiology was one of the first to have CT scans in the 1970s, as there were only three machines that existed in the U.S. at the time.
Bonifield and his wife packed their bags, borrowed $10,000 and moved to England to accommodate his need for training on the machine from James Ambrose, MD, co-developer of the CT scan. Bonifield recalls his time going into the surgery room and seeing the words ‘exploratory laparotomy’ on the big chalkboard. Fast forward 40 years later, cutting open the abdomen to find the reason for pain is a thing of the past, as CT is now available.
