Deep learning technologies can help radiologists, pathologists provide patients with more value

Anant Madabhushi, PhD, a professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, has led significant deep learning research in recent years, but he doesn’t necessarily think this evolving technology will replace radiologists and pathologists any time soon.

“There’s initially always going to be some wincing and anxiety among pathologists and radiologists over this idea—that our computational imaging technology can outperform us or even take our jobs,” Madabhushi, who manages Case Western Reserve University’s Center for Computational Imaging and Personalized Diagnostics, said in a recent profile from the university.  

What these technologies can do, Madabhushi added, is help radiologists and pathologists by providing additional value to the care they can offer patients. “By providing them with decision support, we can help them become more efficient,” Madabhushi said. “For instance, the tools could help reduce the amount of time spent on cases with no obvious disease or obviously benign conditions and instead help them focus on the more confounding cases.”
