ACR, SIIM to host summit focused on AI

The American College of Radiology (ACR) Data Science Institute (DSI) and Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) are joining forces on May 30 to host the Spring 2018 Data Science Summit: Economics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Health Care.

The summit, which will focus on “the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating AI into the economics of healthcare,” is part of the SIIM 2018 Annual Meeting in National Harbor, Maryland. Presenters include ACR DSI Chief Science Officer Keith J. Dreyer, DO, PhD; ACR DSI Chief Medical Officer Bibb Allen, MD; and Zeke Silva, MD, of the ACR Commission on Economics.

“Moving AI algorithms into routine clinical practice will require that our healthcare system supports fair compensation for their development,” Allen said in a prepared statement. “However, there is no simple one-size-fits-all payment scheme for reimbursing the use of AI in healthcare. In fact, the medical community will have to demonstrate the value and cost savings to patients before reimbursement will be considered.”

“Machine learning and deep learning are emerging technologies with great potential that enable novel business models to translate these discoveries to improve patient care,” Paul G. Nagy, PhD, chair of SIIM, said in the same statement.

The ACR hopes these changes, including the addition of diagnostic performance feedback, will help reduce the number of patients with incidental nodules lost to follow-up each year.

And it can do so with almost 100% accuracy as a first reader, according to a new large-scale analysis.

The patient, who was being cared for in the ICU, was not accompanied or monitored by nursing staff during his exam, despite being sedated.
