PHOTO GALLERY of radiology technologies at HIMSS 2023
Many new radiology informatics solutions were on display at the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) 2023 meeting—the world's largest health IT conference.
One of the big IT trends seen at the show was artificial intelligence algorithms to speed medical imaging workflows. Such AI technology can aid providers by completing time consuming tasks such as quantification, along with enabling workflow efficiencies in picture archiving and communication systems. Other big trends at HIMSS23 included cloud data storage adoption, data mining medical records, departmental analytics, the movement toward enterprise imaging systems, and the increased use of virtual reality.
Nuance is the leader in voice recognition automated transcription for healthcare, which is replacing transitional manual transcription of voice recordings. This immediate voice-to-text enables auto completion of reports much faster than waiting for transcribed text to come back and be added into reports.
A virtual reality (VR) review of a cardiac CT at Microsoft's booth at HIMSS23. The vendor DICOM Director demonstrated its Intravision XR cloud-based, 3D model medical software tool that automates the process of creating 3D models from CT and MRI scans and forming VR files. VR and augmented reality were both seen throughout the show.
The main concourse between the HIMSS 2023 expo halls at Chicago's McCormick Place convention center. The attendance this year was below pre-pandemic numbers, but the highest it has been since 2019, with more than 35,000 attendees. It is a sign of recovery for in-person healthcare conferences. A virtual reality (VR) review of a CT dataset in the Verizon booth at HIMSS23. VR and augmented reality (AR) could be found across the floor being demonstrated for a variety of patient education, advanced visualization for surgical planning, training clinicians, behavior health and pain management. Verizon was showing technologies that require larger bandwidth to enable wide use within hospitals.

The UpToDate clinical decision support (CDS) software shown by Wolters Kluwer in the Microsoft booth at HIMSS23. CDS software offers immediate information to clinicians on all disease states, presentations, procedures and treatments, with links to peer-reviewed studies and the most recent guidelines for care.
An example of radiology workflow orchestration on the DICOM reading list. AI considered numerous parameters such as the expertise of a radiologist, work RVUs for all the radiologists working that day, the complexity of the read, contractual turn around times on certain studies, and priority reads marked STAT or when the AI detects a finding that raises it to the top of the list. This type of personalist work lists for each radiologist can help with burn out and cherry picking the easy exams and aid load balancing between radiologists. This was shown on the Merative enterprise imaging system.
Enterprise imaging is seen as the way of the future for all departments across the hospital to storage and access their imaging in one location This also aids integration of all departments into the EMR and enables any clinician in any location to access images without needing a specific viewer or workstation.
