Announcing the Top 5 Imaging IT Projects of 2012

Innovation in imaging IT will take center stage at SIIM 2012, when the top five imaging IT projects of 2012 will be presented to convention attendees. All five honorees emerged from a juried competition co-sponsored by the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) and Radiology Business Journal (RBJ). Each project was selected for its contribution to a different and emergent aspect of the medical imaging field. “The contest is a part of an ongoing SIIM strategy to recognize and encourage innovators,” said SIIM executive director Anna Marie Mason in a statement accompanying the announcement. The winners include: Tessa Cook, MD, PhD, of the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, who was selected for her work on the RADIANCE Toolkit for Customizable CT Dose Monitoring, “which enables imaging facilities to produce customized tables or reports according to their individual dose reporting and review needs,” according to her SIIM 2012 abstract.Bradley J. Erickson, MD, PhD, of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, who was selected for his work on a DICOM-enabled workflow engine.Richard L. Kennedy of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in Sacramento, CA, who was selected for his work on the integration of visible light imaging with enterprise PACS and EMR.Gonzalo Romero Lauro, MBA, of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, who was selected for his work with the Digital Pathology Consultation Portal, which allows for “asynchronous upload of whole slide images as well as the streaming of imaging data directly from the source storage location.”Jonathan Medverd, MD, of the University of Washington Medical Center, who was selected for his work with the Radiology Protocol Tool Recorder (RAPTOR) electronic solution for advanced medical imaging protocol workflow optimization, which is intended for operation in the VA health system. “This competition recognizes innovation, and this year’s entries were exemplary in their ability to solve problems and meet unmet needs,” says Cheryl Proval, imagingbiz.com VP publishing and RBJ editor. The competition was underwritten by Bayer HealthCare, and winners will receive $1,000 scholarships to help fund the cost of attending SIIM 2012 in Orlando. “In health care, the right technological advancements have the potential to shorten the time between testing, diagnosis, and treatment, and this year’s entries show great promise,” said Anthony Cinalli, VP of Bayer HealthCare Radiology & Interventional informatics, in a statement accompanying the release.
