Health Care Job Growth Continues In October

The health care employment picture is looking healthy, with a total of 11,600 jobs added in October and 313,000 jobs added over the past 12 months, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report. Ambulatory care settings and hospitals added the highest number of jobs last month. In the former category, physicians’ offices expanded their roster of positions by 8,200 jobs; home health care services, by 2,000 jobs; and outpatient care centers, by 2,900 jobs. Meanwhile, hospital employment was up by 3,300 jobs in October. Nursing and residential care facilities also brought on new hires, to the tune of 3,500 jobs. Figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics also show that total non-farm payroll employment increased by 80,000 in October, while the national unemployment rate showed a slight decline, to 9%. This rate has changed only minimally since April of 2011. The total number of individuals on the unemployment rolls has dropped by 100,000 to 13.9 million, and the national labor force, currently at 154 million, increased by 181,000 from September to October. Prospects are also looking better for the long-term unemployed.The number of individuals who have been jobless for 27 or more weeks) declined by 366,000, to 5.9 million, this past month.
