Breast cancer survivors detail the stress, anxiety of high medical bills
Many women—including insured women with full-time jobs—face significant out-of-pocket costs after being diagnosed with breast cancer. It leads to many hard-to-answer questions: What should they do? Who can they turn to for help?
Marie Claire interviewed three women currently dealing with those high costs, asking them about their experiences.
“I’m a very organized person,” one breast cancer survivor, Dee Mautz, told Marie Claire. “I asked my insurer to send me a list of what would and would not be covered. The person I spoke with had the nerve to tell me that chemotherapy is considered an experimental treatment, and when they get a claim for it, it’s up to their discretion whether they’ll cover it. They couldn’t even tell me which treatments were covered.”
