Facility puts mammo services on hold after audit uncovers 'serious' image quality concerns
An imaging clinic in South Carolina has temporarily shut down its mammography services due to its failure to meet clinical imaging quality standards.
An audit of Seneca, South Carolina-based Mountainview Medical Imaging uncovered shortcomings related to the image quality of mammograms completed there between Jan. 8, 2024, and Feb. 11, 2026. As a result, women who underwent mammograms at the facility during this timeframe may need to have those exams repeated.
A letter sent in April to patients warned that exam inferiority could result in misdiagnosis or missed findings. As such, the facility is recommending that women discuss the issue with their providers to determine whether their imaging needs to be repeated.
“This does not necessarily mean that the results you and your health care provider(s) were given are wrong,” the letter said. “However, most patients will need to have their mammogram(s) performed at our facility reviewed to determine whether a repeat mammogram at another facility is needed.”
The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services conducted the audit. It raised “serious concerns” about the quality of breast imaging exams produced at the facility and suggested that it fell below the standards put forth by the American College of Radiology. As such, mammography services at the facility have been temporarily shut down.
The letter informed patients that leaders at the facility plan to “take the necessary steps to become operational again after we have completed all the required actions to the satisfaction of [the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services] and our accreditation body, the American College of Radiology.”
The facility has indicated it will pay for any repeat imaging patients might require as a result of the issues uncovered during the audit.
