VIDEO: How to Prevent Radiologist Burnout
Elizabeth Bergey, MD, a diagnostic radiologist at Quantum, chairman of Quantum’s board of directors, president of the physician group, and CEO of the professional corporation, explains some of the issues that cause burnout and how technology can help mitigate issues that cause radiologists to leave. She spoke on this topic in sessions at the 2022 Radiology Business Management Association (RBMA) meeting.
Bergey explains how her radiology practice uses workflow orchestration software to automatically manage their PACS worklists to try and eliminate or reduce some things like cherry pickings and load balancing so all the radiologists get a good mix of exams. She said this will help reduce some of the biggest issues that lead to burnout.
The system also looks at the time spent on cases so it can help measure the complexity of a case being read. She said radiology practices need to understand that not all imaging exams are the same and there are complexity multipliers that make some cases more involved, and there should be a way in the system to reflect this so it does not negatively impact the radiologists RVUs.
