Strategic Radiology grows to over 2,000 physicians, adding state’s largest imaging group

Strategic Radiology has surpassed 2,000 physicians after one of New Jersey’s largest imaging groups recently rejoined the private practice coalition, SR announced Thursday.

East Brunswick, New Jersey-based University Radiology becomes the 43rd member organization of the group. Founded over 60 years ago, the practice employs 180-plus board-certified radiologists handling 2.1 million exams annually across its 23 centers.

University Radiology was previously a member of SR, left in 2022 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but is now opting to rejoin a few years later.

“Our return to Strategic Radiology reflects our ongoing commitment to clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and the independent private practice model,” Sandip Basak, MD, chairman of the University Radiology board, said in a statement March 20. “We recognize the immense value of collaborating with like-minded radiology groups across the country, and we look forward to reengaging with SR’s initiatives to enhance quality and innovation in radiology.”

University Radiology bills itself as the largest provider of subspecialty radiology and telerad services in New Jersey. The practice manages and provides preliminary and final reads for 14 affiliated regional healthcare centers. It also serves as the academic radiology faculty at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey. In 2024, University Radiology became an American College of Radiology Recognized Center for Healthcare AI, a quality assurance program for artificial intelligence in imaging, SR noted.

“[University Radiology’s] dedication to clinical quality, innovation, and independent practice aligns perfectly with our mission,” Scott Bundy, MD, CEO and chairman of Strategic Radiology, said in the announcement. “Their membership strengthens our collaborative efforts to improve radiology practice operations and patient care nationwide.”

The ACR hopes these changes, including the addition of diagnostic performance feedback, will help reduce the number of patients with incidental nodules lost to follow-up each year.

And it can do so with almost 100% accuracy as a first reader, according to a new large-scale analysis.

The patient, who was being cared for in the ICU, was not accompanied or monitored by nursing staff during his exam, despite being sedated.
