Illinois breast tomosynthesis bill signed into law

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed a bill into law last month adding breast tomosynthesis to the list of procedures that must be covered by health insurance plans.

The law went into effect immediately.

State Rep. Michael McAuliffe, who sponsored the bill, said it will help women get more accurate diagnoses.

“Early detection is the key to the best prognosis for those diagnosed with breast cancer, and this enhanced imaging technology will save lives,” McAuliffe said in a statement. “Ensuring that this 3-D technology is covered by insurance will allow more women to be properly diagnosed early so they can begin a treatment plan sooner.”
