A Lafayette, Louisiana hospital has created a scholarship fund for women pursuing careers in radiology to honor an employee who died in a local theater shooting last summer.
Mayci Breaux, who was studying to become a radiology and ultrasound technician at Louisiana State University at Eunice and preparing to begin clinical work at Lafayette General Medical Center, was shot and died July 23, 2015. She was 21 years old.
In her memory, the Lafayette General Foundation has created a scholarship fund for young women following Breaux’s path for a career in radiology, the hospital announced in a statement.
Louisiana women enrolled in a radiology technology program and have a 3.5 GPA or higher qualify for the program. Only one recipient will be chosen and the foundation will announce it Sept. 25, which is Breaux’s birthday.
The scholarship fund began as only one donation from a radiology technician in Montana who donated $100 in Breaux’s name a day after the shooting. A $5,000 contribution made on Wednesday that brought the fund’s total to $25,000.
