One of the biggest stories to come out of the Jan. 7 football game between the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints was how the Panthers handled a possible concussion to quarterback Cam Newton. When Newton was sacked late in the game, he fell to his knees while trying to get off the field, making it look like he may have suffered a concussion.
However, without going to the locker room for a closer examination, Newton returned to the game just one play later, which appeared to go against the concussion protocol currently followed by the National Football League (NFL).
Adam Schefter of ESPN is now reporting that the Panthers have told NFL officials Newton fell because of a knee injury, not anything related to a possible concussion. “A league source told ESPN that the bothersome knee injury was a contributing factor when Newton staggered to the ground and struggled to stay balanced once he took a knee after a hard hit to the head from Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata,” Schefter wrote.
The NFL’s investigation is ongoing.
