The National Football League’s concussion protocol has been the source of controversy this year, and now it could play a key role in the biggest game of the season, Super Bowl LII.
Still under the league’s concussion protocol, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will not attend Super Bowl LII’s Opening Night. Gronkowski suffered a concussion earlier this month and will have to by cleared by an independent neurologist before he can play in the game against the Philadelphia Eagles, according to a report from CBS Sports.
To play, Gronkowski will have to progress through the five different steps of the protocol: rest and recovery, light aerobic exercise, continued aerobic exercise and introduction of strength training, football-specific activities, and full football activity and clearance.
For now, he is back to practicing with the Patriots. Super Bowl LII takes place on Feb. 4.
