NIH's biomedical imaging agency chooses UC-Irvine's Tromberg as new director
Bruce J. Tromberg, PhD, has been selected as the director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), one of the 27 agencies that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Tromberg will oversee a 230-person staff and a portfolio of 800 grants dedicated to imaging and technologies to improve the detection, treatment and prevention of disease.
“Bruce brings substantial experience in biophotonics and demonstrated his commitment to state-of-the-art imaging and bioengineering technologies through his research and leadership on numerous advisory committees, including the NIBIB National Advisory Council,” said Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD, director of NIH, in a prepared statement. “We look forward to having him join the NIH to guide NIBIB in the development and testing of biotechnologies to advance human health.”
Tromberg is currently a professor at the University of California, Irvine in biomedical engineering and surgery. He also directs the university’s Beckman Laser Institute and Medical Clinic. He will join NIH in 2019.
In his 30-year career, Tromberg has participated in numerous NIH-supported research projects, including 20 years as the principle investigator for the Laser Microbeam and Medical Program. He also served on the NIBIB National Advisory Council from 2012 to 2016.
