Carestream plant in Colorado recognized for energy efficiency

Carestream announced Tuesday that its manufacturing plant in Windsor has won a Colorado Industrial Energy Efficiency award from the Colorado Energy Office. Energy consumption at the plant has decreased by 5.4 percent in the last two years, and Carestream says it is hoping to reduce consumption by another 5 percent by 2020.

Cavan Kelsey, Carestream’s corporate environmental health and safety & sustainability director, said in a prepared statement that the company is always paying close attention to the impact it has on the planet.

“We continuously examine our manufacturing processes and product components to identify areas where we can help preserve the environment,” Kelsey said. “Our aim is to reduce energy use by increasing the efficiency of our operations even when we are adding additional equipment to achieve production goals.”

Carestream says recent renovations to the plant played a significant role in the successful reduction in energy consumption. Engineers rebuilt an old steam turbine chiller, for example, and variable frequency drives were installed in various cooling towner fan motors and supply pumps. Continued recycling efforts and smart hazardous waste control were also listed as reasons behind the success.
