3T MRI scanner from Siemens Healthineers gains FDA clearance

Siemens Healthineers announced Wednesday, Jan. 30, that its MAGNETOM Lumina 3T MRI scanner has received FDA clearance.

The system includes a 70-cm open bore and features that use artificial intelligence to accelerate MRI workflow. New Turbo Suite upgrades can also reduce scan time on certain musculoskeletal examinations by as much as 50 percent, according to the company.

“With the MAGNETOM Lumina, Siemens Healthineers is transforming care delivery by providing high performance with a strong return on investment,” Jane Kilkenny, vice president of magnetic resonance at Siemens Healthineers North America, said in a prepared statement. “The patient experience is enhanced with a state-of-the-art infotainment system, lightweight and flexible coils, and new speed applications that enable the provider to get the patient on and off the table faster.”

The new F-18 flurpiridaz radiotracer is expected to help drive cardiac PET growth, but it requires waiting between rest and stress scans. Software from MultiFunctional Imaging can help care teams combat that problem.

News of an incident is a stark reminder that healthcare workers and patients aren’t the only ones who need to be aware around MRI suites.

The ACR hopes these changes, including the addition of diagnostic performance feedback, will help reduce the number of patients with incidental nodules lost to follow-up each year.
