Nuance Named Leader in New 2015 Medical Image Sharing Report for PowerShare Network

BURLINGTON, Mass., August 3, 2015 – Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) announced today that peer60, a smart data software company, has identified Nuance as the leading provider of medical image-sharing offerings in its 2015 market report. Based on a survey of more than 500 healthcare organizations, this report confirms that image sharing has become a top investment priority for the industry and that healthcare organizations overwhelmingly prefer cloud-based technology to facilitate the medical image exchange. Peer60 calls Nuance’s performance in both mind share and market leader categories “an impressive feat” for the growing image-sharing market.

“Hospitals and healthcare organizations seek to provide the best care for their patients and that means real-time access to medical images and reports,” said Karen Holzberger, vice president and general manager of diagnostics, Nuance Communications. “Our goal is provide our clients with solutions that support them in this mission, and one way we do this is through our cloud-based PowerShare Network, which ensures care teams have the information they need to make the best treatment decisions for their patients.”

In the report, Nuance ranked as the top vendor in both mind share (25%) and market share (17%). To date, the Nuance PowerShare Network has facilitated the exchange of more than 3 billion medical images among more than 2,700 facilities, overcoming the barriers that organizations and individual physicians face when they need to send or receive X-rays, CT scans, and other medical images and reports for their patients who are transferred or have been treated across the country at various healthcare facilities. With the PowerShare Network, providers can securely share and access medical images and reports in real time, across desktop and mobile devices, resulting in a clear picture of the patient’s healthcare needs and more timely treatment.

Cloud-based Image Sharing Prime Growth Area
According to the peer60 report, while radiology departments have the greatest need for image sharing today, there is a growing need to exchange this information across departments and facilities as coordination of care is “now a critical component in the effective practice of medicine.” The report also found:

  • 67 percent of providers cite image sharing as a critical priority;
  • 68 percent believe cloud networks are the ideal technology to facilitate the sharing of image files;
  • 88 percent of providers identify receiving medical images from other sites as the most important problem to solve through image sharing.

The Power of Images Together with Information
While the peer60 report looked at industry interest in medical image exchanges, another point of differentiation for this market is the ability to share images and reports, review previous studies from anywhere, and access clinical guidelines at the point of interpretation. With its PowerScribe 360 Reporting v3.0, Nuance uniquely provides clients with real-time access to patient images and reports, as well as quality guidance and clinical decision support based on the American College of Radiology (ACR) best practices, all available within radiologists’ workflows, giving them the certainty needed to deliver consistent, evidence-based recommendations to referring physicians.

“Saint Luke’s consistently looks for better and more efficient ways to serve our patients,” said Deborah Gash, CIO of Saint Luke’s Health System. “When our physicians receive a patient from another organization and have the immediate ability to view on a mobile device the images and reports related to that patient’s care, all the while speaking on the phone with the referring physician, it is a tremendous benefit to the patient.”
