Florida physician arrested after charging patient for high-intensity focused ultrasound, never performing procedure

Ronald Wheeler, MD, a urologist out of Sarasota, Florida, has been arrested for allegedly collecting $46,500 from a patient for high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and then never performing the procedure.

According to a police report, the patient first contacted Wheeler back in May 2016, when Wheeler allegedly made the diagnosis of prostate cancer without performing a tissue biopsy. Wheeler later collected $46,500 to perform HIFU, but never performed the procedure.

Wheeler says the incident was a “misunderstanding,” according to a report from Medscape Medical News. He also described the police’s investigation as “shoddy.”

This is the second time in less than a year Wheeler has been arrested. He was also arrested in 2017 for practicing medicine after having his license revoked.
