21st Century Oncology partners with University of Arizona’s Center for Applied Nanobioscience and Medicine in Phoenix to advance cancer research

PHOENIX – June 15, 2015 – 21st Century Oncology, the nation’s premier cancer treatment network, has entered a new research partnership agreement with the University of Arizona’s Center for Applied Nanobioscience and Medicine at the College of Medicine in Phoenix.

21st Century Oncology, the largest radiation therapy provider in the U.S., partners with leading universities, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, cooperative groups and medical device companies to further cancer research. Their clinical research trials are conducted across the country to assess the effectiveness of various cancer treatments and bring research opportunities to cancer patients in local communities.

“We are pleased to begin a partnership with the University of Arizona that will allow us to continue our focus on patients and bringing access to radiation oncology research into the community setting,” said Steven Finkelstein, M.D., Chief Science Officer of 21st Century Oncology.

This partnership combines scientific and clinical expertise from both teams to study radiation-induced mechanisms and specific bio-signatures in advanced radiotherapy providing molecular information in clinical treatment. Both 21st Century Oncology and the UA Center intend to propose at least two research programs during the calendar year. In their partnership, they will share current technology platforms, as well as materials, research sites and additional resources. The outlook of this initiative will allow guiding strategies for beneficial and targeted radiotherapies linked with specific patient profiles and diseases which will likely open new avenues to efficient healthcare delivery, but also aid in training the next generation of radiation oncologists.

“This collaboration between 21st Century Oncology and the UA Center will make a positive impact in the field of radiation oncology plus increasing the understanding of tumor biology and response to diverse therapies,” said Frederic Zenhausern, Ph.D., MBA, Professor and Director of the Center for Applied Nanobioscience and Medicine at the University of Arizona.

“Together, we will enhance care practices and reach new outcomes for cancer patients.”

“Our steadfast commitment to research is reinforced though this partnership with the University of Arizona,” says Daniel Dosoretz, M.D. President, CEO and Co-Founder of 21st Century Oncology. “The research and clinical trials we conduct today will improve outcomes for patients with cancer moving forward.”
