About 69% of radiologists surveyed in 2023 said their organization is understaffed, up from 67% the previous year, the two associations reported. 

"We strongly urge CMS to acknowledge the negative effects of the proposed payment cut on Medicare beneficiaries in the final rule," the American Medical Association wrote in a comment letter shared Sept. 5. 

Medicare wants to limit the technical component for the exam to the HOPPS rate, which would represent an 81% reduction to the MPFS amount of $459.92. 

CMS first started allowing this perk in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with providers able to oversee exams using real-time audio and visual technology. 

NRC estimates that 29 of these “medical events” occurred between 2021 and 2023, with “many” involving new therapeutic radiopharma procedures.
