Technologist in England fired, removed from official register for drinking on the job
After making mistakes under the influence of alcohol, a technologist at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, has been fired and had her name removed from the country’s official register. The ruling that she be “struck off,” meaning she can no longer be hired as a technologist, came from England’s Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service.
Kate E. Gibson made numerous mistakes, including exposing one patient to 13 times more radiation than necessary, in 2016, according to a report from BBC News. She did not attend her hearing. She had previously told her employer that she smelled like alcohol due to a medical condition.
“The trust considered the issues to be very serious and we carried out a full and thorough investigation, which resulted in Miss Gibson being dismissed,” a spokesperson from Freeman Hospital said, as quoted by BBC News. “The safety of our patients is the first priority of the trust, and our investigations found that no patients were harmed as a result of Miss Gibson's actions.”
