UK women unaware of mental health impact post breast cancer diagnosis
Breast Cancer Care and Mind, two British charities, are calling on the government to provide better mental health support after breast cancer diagnoses.
A survey issued by both charities found eight in 10 women with breast cancer in England are not told how their diagnosis may impact their mental health—including increased risk of long-term anxiety and depression.
Of the 3,000 breast cancer patients in the survey, 33 percent experienced anxiety for the first time after their diagnosis and treatment. Another 8 percent had a panic attack for the first time as a result of diagnosis or treatment. Roughly 45 percent of those surveyed are continuously in fear of their cancer returning, which may significantly impact daily life.
