Strategic Radiology enters new state, adding 24-physician Radiology Inc.

Strategic Radiology—a coalition of independent imaging groups banding together to find efficiencies—is entering its 23rd state with the addition of Radiology Inc.

Founded in 1968, the Huntington-based business is the largest private radiology practice in West Virginia, employing 24 physicians. Radiology Inc. delivers subspecialized services to six hospitals and three health systems, operating 24/7.

President Paul D. Akers, MD, said the practice joined Strategic Radiology for peer support, shared resources and to “maximize our adoption of best practices.”

“Throughout our history, Radiology Inc. has prioritized superior quality care, operational efficiency and financial sustainability,” Akers said in a statement Feb. 19. “We believe that the private practice model best meets those priorities while maximizing the clinical value to our patients, our physicians and our hospital partners in the tri-state region.”

Located in West Virginia’s second largest city—at the confluence of the Ohio and Guyandotte rivers in the state's southwest—Radiology Inc. serves communities at the Appalachian Mountains’ foothills. Huntington is a vital rail-to-river transfer point for the marine transportation industry and home to Marshall University, Strategic Radiology noted. Radiology Inc. also has a “sophisticated” IT infrastructure, providing around-the-clock support to clients on a unified platform.

“Radiology Inc. has a reputation for providing superior quality and service and strong hospital and health system relationships, and the practice is eager to engage in collaborative relationships with other like-minded, independently owned radiology groups,” Scott Bundy, MD, CEO and chair of Strategic Radiology, said in a statement.
