ACR to take part in $685 million federal program

The American College of Radiology (ACR) and 38 other healthcare networks and supporting organizations have been chosen to participate in the Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative, a $685 million federal investment designed to improve the quality of care in U.S. healthcare.

HHS Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell announced details about the initiative earlier this week.

“Supporting doctors and other health care professionals change the way they work is critical to improving quality and spending our health care dollars more wisely,” Burwell said in a statement. “These awards will give patients more of the information they need to make informed decisions about their care and give clinicians access to information and support to improve care coordination and quality outcomes.”

The ACR could receive as much as $2,926,400 for its participation, which will involve helping at least 24,000 members of the Radiology Support, Communication, and Alignment Network (R-SCAN) improve their quality of care and offer their patients more access to important information.

“The R-SCAN program aligns with the ACR Imaging 3.0 initiative in which radiologists help referring providers select the best imaging exam, help patients avoid unwarranted testing, reduce errors and improve quality and safety,” William T. Thorwarth, Jr., MD, ACR CEO, said in a statement.
