The 10 largest imaging center operators in the US
A new analysis from Definitive Healthcare pinpoints the 10 largest imaging center corporations in the U.S., based on location count.
RadNet tops the list with approximately 383 outposts at the time of the analysis, followed by the US Oncology Network (141), a chain of independent cancer docs backed by McKesson. Definitive Healthcare, a publicly traded commercial-intelligence firm, based the findings off data from its ImagingView product, which includes info from more than 22,000 centers.
“As demand for outpatient imaging continues to rise, larger imaging companies are expanding through acquisitions, new site development, and care models focused on improving access and convenience for patients,” Definitive Healthcare said in an update posted July 23. “Several factors are contributing to this growth, including advances in imaging technology, increased demand for preventive diagnostic screenings, and an aging U.S. population.”
Definitive, which is based Framingham, Massachusetts, defines an “imaging corporation” as a large radiology company that owns and operates networks of outpatient centers. Together, the 10 largest imaging corporations represent over 1,100 centers, highlighting these companies’ growing role in healthcare.
“The outpatient imaging market remains fragmented, but corporate-backed imaging networks continue to expand through acquisitions, new site development, and regional growth strategies,” Definitive added. “Tracking these organizations provides visibility into how imaging capacity is distributed, where market consolidation is occurring, and which entities represent the largest opportunities for engagement.”
The list appears to be somewhat outdated and incomplete. It excludes Radiology Partners, the largest imaging practice in the U.S., which operates approximately 115 outpatient centers. That’s because locations are reported separately across RP’s various affiliated practices, such as ARA Diagnostic Imaging in Austin, Texas, and Jefferson Radiology in Hartford, Connecticut. Lumexa Imaging, formerly US Radiology Specialists, also is absent, though it operates about 190 centers across brands including Touchstone Medical Imaging (No. 7 on the list) and American Health Imaging (No. 10).
Also, RadNet currently has approximately has 440 imaging centers after executing several recent acquisitions. The tallies also are off for Solis Mammography, which has over 150 locations amid rapid growth over the past year, and SimonMed, with 175 at our last count.
