Renowned radiologist Jeffrey Klein, MD, named RSNA board president

CHICAGO — Renowned radiologist Jeffrey S. Klein, MD, has been named president of the RSNA Board of Directors, the society announced Wednesday morning.

A consultant at the VA White River Junction Healthcare System in Vermont, Klein is a noted expert in the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer. He previously served as editor of the Radiological Society of North America’s RadioGraphics journal from 2012 to 2020.

As RSNA president, Klein plans to champion global advances in radiology education, science and technology. “Delivering world-class learning resources that evolve with the needs of the medical imaging community,” will be a key focus, according to the society.

His appointment comes after RSNA also named University of Southern California med school Dean Carolyn C. Meltzer, MD, as board chair on Sunday. RSNA’s president is responsible for external relations, while the chair presides over the society’s board and affairs. Outgoing President Umar Mahmood, MD, PhD, also gave his departing address at the society’s annual meeting on Nov. 30.

“RSNA is a forum that connects members with pioneers in industry and technology,” Klein said in a statement shared Dec. 3. “I am honored to lead the society as we continue to explore new avenues for our top-tier journals, our vast offering of core and cutting-edge educational opportunities, and a scientific assembly and technical exhibition that is like none other in the world.”

Klein joined the University of Vermont in 1995, launching a nearly 30-year tenure as an esteemed faculty member, RSNA noted. There, he has served as an associate professor of radiology, vice chair of the department, chief of thoracic imaging, and later as endowed professor of radiology. Klein also is a longtime manuscript reviewer for RSNA journals Radiology and RadioGraphics.

He additionally has held multiple leadership positions with the Society of Thoracic Radiology, including serving as president from 2005 to 2006. He previously was a member of the American College of Radiology’s Committee on CT accreditation and an examiner for the American Board of Radiology.
