Siemens Healthineers partners with prominent health system to advance precision care

Siemens Healthineers is entering into a strategic partnership with a well-respected medical institution to improve cancer care through the advancement of imaging and theranostics.

The health tech giant announced its collaboration with Northwestern Medicine on Monday, citing the latter’s long history of medical research and innovation.

“With more than 20 years of research collaboration, we have in Northwestern Medicine an innovative collaborator dedicated to making important strides in cancer care, improving both care quality and offering access to care closer to patients’ homes,” John Kowal, president and head of the Americas at Siemens Healthineers, said in an announcement.

The duo has officially entered the first phase of its multi-year agreement, which seeks to explore how different avenues of imaging, theranostics, interventional radiology and radiation oncology can be harnessed to tailor treatments to patients’ unique needs. Together, they plan to establish a global center of excellence in theranostics, taking advantage of Siemens’ state-of-the-art technology and software to advance the use of radiopharmaceuticals to diagnose and treat cancer.

The organizations also are eying interventional MRI tools and procedures, with plans to collaborate with leading device companies to further explore how minimally invasive treatments can improve oncologic care. Artifical intelligence will play a key role in the duo’s research initiatives as well.

“This alliance represents our unwavering commitment to innovation in imaging and cancer care,” said James Carr, MD, chair of Northwestern's Department of Radiology. “By integrating Siemens Healthineers’ advanced technologies with Northwestern Medicine’s clinical expertise, we can create a future where patients benefit from faster diagnoses, more personalized treatments, and transformative outcomes across the continuum of care.”

Northwestern Medicine is considered a major academic health system, with 11 hospitals and over 200 additional locations throughout Illinois. The system employs over 5,400 physicians and thousands of other healthcare professionals.
