The University of Utah’s school of medicine has picked David B. Larson, MD, MBA, a noted physician and AI expert, as its next radiology chair.
He comes to the Salt Lake-city based institution by way of Stanford University, where Larson currently serves as director of its radiology AI lab, among other roles. “Dr. Larson is an accomplished physician, educator, researcher and leader whose experience spans every aspect of the academic mission,” Kristina Callis Duffin, MD, dean of the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, said in a statement June 3. “He brings a proven record of building high-performing teams, fostering innovation, and guiding complex organizations through periods of growth and transformation.”

Larson first joined Stanford in 2013, helping lead its Department of Radiology through “significant growth and transformation,” Utah notes. As vice chair, executive vice and acting chair, he helped oversee clinical operations, faculty development, strategic planning and educational programs. This while guiding the department through periods of “rapid growth and organizational change.” Larson also is recognized for his contributions to quality improvement, patient safety and AI in medicine. He additionally serves on the American Board of Radiology’s board and as VP of the American College of Radiology.
“The University of Utah has an extraordinary Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences with a longstanding reputation for excellence in clinical care, education, research and innovation,” Larson said in the announcement. “I am honored to join this outstanding community and excited to work alongside faculty, staff, trainees, and partners across University of Utah Health."
Larson’s leadership will focus on continuing to advance the missions of patient care, education, research and innovation “while building on that strong foundation.” He’ll take over as radiology chair beginning on Sept 14.
