The Radiology Business Management Association recently recognized Mark Kalmar with its top honor—the prestigious Calhoun Award.
Named after Joseph D. Calhoun—an MD who guided the first RBMA steering committee in 1968—the award honors outstanding contributions to radiology business management and the association. Kalmar is CEO of Dallas-based Texas Radiology Associates and past president of the RBMA. He helped spearhead the association’s Succession Planning Team following the announced retirement of leader Bob Still and led the search committee for his eventual replacement.
RBMA immediate past president Kit Crancer, who presented the award, said the winner was chosen for his “tireless commitment to the RBMA and steady hand in helping to change the organization’s future.”
“I can’t thank the RBMA enough for granting me the privilege to work closely with their amazing staff and our industry’s innovators,” Kalmar told Radiology Business. “This award came in such a memorable year, with my good friend Bob Still’s retirement and the culmination of Kit Crancer’s sensational presidency.”
The association formally announced the winners in an update shared April 29. Here is a quick rundown of the other 2024 award winners named at RBMA’s annual meeting, which was April 14 to 17 in Las Vegas:
- Stacy Sanso, director of patient access for Georgetown, Texas-based ARA Diagnostic Imaging, received the President’s Award for “going above and beyond to promote an atmosphere that enhances networking and progress through sharing.”
- Jamie Dyer, MBA, chief outpatient operations officer of Central Oregon Radiology Associates, in Bend, received the Young Professional Award for fostering growth within this age segment of the association.
- Bob Still received the inaugural Bob Still Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be bestowed “selectively,” rather than annually. RBMA said it created the award in honor of its retiring executive director to “celebrate visionary leaders who have exhibited extraordinary dedication, innovation, and stewardship in advancing the practice and business of radiology management throughout their illustrious careers.”
- The Global Achievement Awards recognized several individuals for their “exceptional service to the RBMA community over the past year.” Winners this year included:
- Ed Gaines, VP of regulatory affairs & industry liaison at Zotec Partners, Carmel, Indiana.
- Linda Wilgus, MBA, executive director and chief financial officer for Northwest Radiology, Marion, Indiana. (She also was named the new co-executive director of the association.)
- RBMA Mid-Atlantic Chapter Advisory Board the latter included Thomas Marshall, MBA, chief marketing and business development officer for Chesapeake Medical Imaging, Easton, Maryland; Kara Connor, executive director of business development at PBS Radiology Business Experts, Reno, Nevada; Karen Barden, director of marketing and business development, UVA Health System, Department of Radiology, Charlottesville, Virginia; Harry Claridge IV, director of practice operations, diagnostic imaging, University of Maryland Faculty Physicians Inc., Baltimore; and Rena Geckle, a consultant who previously retired from her role at the Johns Hopkins Department of Radiology in Baltimore.
- RBMA also named its 2024 Class of Fellows. The designation dates to 2009 and recognizes the significant contributions made by members to the association and profession. These year’s fellows are:
- Jennifer K. Coleman, executive director, Grand Traverse Radiologists, Traverse City, Michigan.
- Janene Markuske, MBA, executive director, IntelliRad Imaging, Miami.
- Sara Nofziger-Drew, VP of revenue cycle services, Acclara, Portland, Oregon.
- Matthew Ostrum, executive VP of sales and marketing, MBMS LLC, Newark, Delaware.
New RBMA board
The Radiology Business Management Association also announced its newly elected board of directors and officers for 2024-2025. Since its founding in 1968, RBMA members have voted each year to elect an all-volunteer board from among their peers.
Peter Moffatt will serve as president, succeeding Christopher “Kit” Crancer of Rayus Radiology. Moffatt is the senior VP of business development for Dublin, Ohio-based Advocate RCM.
“In the year ahead, I’m dedicated to our members, their practices and, most importantly, our patients,” Moffatt said in a statement. “I look forward to supporting a team of over 100 volunteers working hard to deliver more trusted educational content, one-of-a-kind networking opportunities, and aggressive, consistent advocacy in Washington and state capitols and within the industry that you’ve come to rely on from RBMA.”
Central Oregon Radiology’s Jamie Dyer, MBA, will serve as president-elect while Steve Kahn, pHY Consultants, will continue as board treasurer. ARA Diagnostic Imaging’s Stacy Sanso will continue as board secretary and parliamentarian. Other new directors include Mark Canada (Radiology Associates of Richmond), Nicole Jones-Gerbino (PBS Radiology Business Experts), and Schaeffer Smith (Comprehensive Radiology Services).
