Humanitarian awards
The American College of Radiology Foundation on May 4 also announced the recipients of its Global Humanitarian Award, recognizing those who improve access to radiology services in areas of need. This year’s winners are Frank Minja, MD, and Toma Omofoye, MD.
Minja, with Emory University in Atlanta, co-founded an interventional radiology program at Muhimbili National Hospital in Tanzania in 2018. The program brings IR teams from around the world for two-week blocks to provide training to local rads. Road2IR, the program’s support organization, aids in funding, along with helping mobilize teams and provide equipment and education. These efforts have since spread to neighboring countries such as Uganda and Rwanda, with 16 IR fellows graduating, providing over 10,000 procedures.
Meanwhile, Omofoye, with MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, has “significantly advanced” breast cancer care across Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean, ACR said. She developed an online breast imaging curriculum designed for lower-income countries, reaching over 225 participants across multiple continents. Omofoye also is helping to advance radiology education in Zambia by supporting the University Teaching Hospital radiology residency program and educating the country’s first breast imaging specialist, ACR noted.
“Doctors Minja and Omofoye exemplify the spirit of this award through their dedication to helping educate and train radiologists and their teams in underserved countries,” Alan H. Matsumoto, MD, MA, chair of the ACR Board of Chancellors, said in a separate announcement. “The ACR Foundation is proud to recognize the work of these physician role models for their commitment to achieve better health outcomes and improve patient care in these countries.”
