University of Alabama at Birmingham names new radiology chair
The University of Alabama at Birmingham has named its next radiology chair following a national search.
Internationally recognized physician and researcher Mahmud Mossa-Basha, MD, has been selected to lead the UAB Department of Radiology, effective Nov. 1. He currently serves as a professor of radiology, neurology and neuroscience, along with endowed chair of neuro-oncology, at University of Washington Medicine.
Mossa-Basha succeeds Cheri Canon, MD, who had served as chair from 2011 to 2024 before transitioning to chief physician of the UAB Health System. Srini Tridandapani, MD, MBA, PhD, has acted as interim chair since then and will remain in that capacity until November.
“Dr. Mossa-Basha’s visionary leadership, collaborative spirit and unwavering dedication to patient-centered care make him an ideal leader for our Department of Radiology,” Anupam Agarwal, MD, dean of the UAB Heersink School of Medicine, said in a July 31 announcement. “I welcome him to this important role and look forward to supporting his efforts to advance our mission in clinical care, research and education.”
Mossa-Basha also is vice chair of research and clinical transformation at UW and has held other leadership roles including director of MRI and chief of radiology. At the Seattle-based institution, he has guided AI implementation efforts that have “significantly improved imaging throughput and operational efficiency.” He also has helped strengthen the school’s research infrastructure while enhancing funding, reaching top 13 status in National Institutes of Health backing for academic radiology departments.
The radiologist has authored over 180 peer-reviewed publications and served as lead investigator on numerous projects. Mossa-Basha additionally has supported the growth and success of dozens of trainees and junior faculty, UAB noted, and he is “widely respected” for his expertise in neuroimaging. He has received numerous awards and currently serves as senior editor of the American Journal of Neuroradiology, on the RSNA Board of Trustees and the board of the Society of Magnetic Resonance Angiography.
“Joining UAB Radiology is an extraordinary opportunity to contribute to a world-renowned institution that is deeply committed to innovation and impact,” Mossa-Basha said in a statement. “I’m inspired by the energy and expertise across the department, UAB Medicine, and the broader community.”
