West Virginia organization looks to eliminate breast cancer in state
West Virginia Breast Health Initiative (WVBHI), a grassroots organization looking to increase breast cancer awareness, education and prevention throughout West Virginia, recently announced its goal of reducing the number of West Virginians who die from breast cancer every week from the current average of six to zero.
WVBHI will use its funds to support patients and their families who are in need financially, educate patients recently diagnosed with breast cancer and participate in community outreach programs to educate youth on breast cancer detection and breast health. The organization will further their end goal by providing grants for rural community health clinics and hospitals to assist in early detection breast cancer screening tests, among other initiatives.
WVBHI's mission and outreach coordinator, Misty Bennett, is a breast cancer survivor currently battling Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. Bennett told the Williamson Daily News that she is looking to help her community through this initiative.
"My story is just one of many stories of women and men in West Virginia that need help,” she said.
