Radiologists 2 of the 3 best-paid physicians in Canadian maritime province

Two diagnostic radiologists and an ophthalmologist sit atop a list of physicians earning big salaries in New Brunswick.

Based on data provided by the province’s finance and treasury board, the list shows the three grossing between $1.95 million and $1,999,999 in the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2022.

The pace-setting radiologists are J. Stewart MacMillan of Miramichi Regional Hospital and Martin Finnegan of Dr. Georges L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre in Moncton.

Also close to the top was diagnostic radiologist Remi Savoie, also of the Dumont hospital, who had Medicare billings last year of between $1,500,000 and $1,549,999.

An annual report compiled by New Brunswick’s comptroller has a total of 35 physicians at or over the $1 million salary mark.

The report documents payments from the government for insured medical services, according to a news item posted Jan. 2 by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

The CBC notes that the dollar amounts “represent gross earnings and do not reflect expenses some doctors may have, such as staff salaries or rent.”

New Brunswick has a population of approximately 777,000 and a physician workforce of around 1,900.

The CBC points out that the majority of these doctors earned less than $400,000 from the province last year, “but the number who make more than $1 million continues to grow.”

The media giant says this is the seventh year New Brunswick has released amounts it pays medical practitioners following a recommendation made in 2012 by the auditor general.
