SNMMI offers new grant for physics training
The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) announced Jan. 6 that a new nuclear medicine physics residency grant would provide $75,000 in funding for a single resident for up to two years.
The grant is a contribution from the Education and Research Foundation for Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging to establish new residency programs that will train physicists in nuclear medicine specialties and prepare them for board certification from either the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine (ABSNM).
“New rules and training requirements are being applied for those looking to become certified in nuclear medicine physics,” said Frederic H. Fahey, chair of the SNMMI Grants and Awards Committee, in a release. “Only a few residency training programs exist for nuclear medicine physicists, and it’s critical that there be more training opportunities so that these individuals can qualify to sit for board certification exams.”
Candidates will be considered based on nuclear medicine facilities available, staffing, training models that outline intended pedagogy and rotations, the training associates who will partner with residents, and their overall commitment to nuclear medicine. The application deadline for the 2013-2014 SNMMI Nuclear Medicine Physics Residency Training Program is Feb. 14.
